Cephalopods | Lembeh Resort

May 11, 2019 - May 20, 2019

Special Scientific Expedition on Cephalopod Camouflage

Join us, Annie Crawley and Dr. Roger Hanlon for a special 9 night trip to our old home of Critters at Lembeh Resort in Lembeh Strait, Indonesia.

Dr. Roger Hanlon is one of the worlds’ cephalopod experts at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, which is an affiliate of the University of Chicago.  The Hanlon Lab is dedicated to the study of camouflage in animals.  You can read more about the lab here and more about Dr. Hanlon here.

He has also recently published two new books on cephalopods:

Cephalopod Behaviour (Hanlon & Messenger; Cambridge University Press 2018

Octopus, Squid, and Cuttlefish: a Visual, Scientific Guide to the Ocean’s Most Advanced Invertebrate (Hanlon, Vecchione & Allcock; University of Chicago Press 2018)

Dr. Hanlon and his assistant will be brining with them their Hyper Spectral Imager (HSI), a specialized camera that can capture an incredible 16 colors per pixel (as opposed to the 3 that all our cameras capture).  They will be using this to capture cephalopod behavior, camouflaging, etc.

This scientific trip is sure to not only be educational, but fun with incredible diving in the Lembeh Strait! Dr. Hanlon will be giving evening presentations on cephalopods, their behaviors, camouflaging, and discussing the day’s findings. You won’t want to miss this very special opportunity!

About Annie Crawley

Annie Crawley has worked around the world for two decades with cameras in hand, mostly below the surface of our ocean. She graduated from the University of Washington Communication Leadership Program with a Master of Communications Building Communities and Networks. Her mission in life is to help others understand their interconnection with our environment and wants people to have a conversation about the ocean every single day. Annie first dived with Roger Hanlon in Lembeh Strait nearly 20 years ago. She’s had cephalopod fever ever since and is looking forward to sharing it with you! Annie shares the beauty and wonder of exploring our ocean together with three issues facing our world ocean: pollution, climate change, and sustainability. Annie wants everyone to join the team and be the voice for our ocean as without us, there is none. You can find out more about Annie here www.AnnieCrawley.com
